Filhas da Liberdade

Synopsis

Fifty years after Mozambique’s independence, four women ask what freedom means today.

Inyalambi, Achia, Wonder, and Emily come from different generations and backgrounds: from a women’s shelter in a rural area to urban activism to the afro-diaspora. Together, their perspectives tell of colonial heritage, patriarchal violence, and the ongoing struggle for self-determination.

Filhas da Liberdade combines personal narratives with collective history. The film recalls matriarchal structures that were suppressed by colonialism, the reappropriation of rituals, the sharing of rage, and the granting of courage.

These women make clear that independence is not a historical state, but an ongoing struggle and a shared practice. Or, as Inyalambi would say: “How can I be free, when the others are not?”
